Your Guide to Cruising Out of Miami

There’s something iconic about cruising out of PortMiami — sailing away with the skyline at your back, turquoise water shimmering below, and that unmistakable Miami energy in the air. I’ll never forget one of our sailaways when we stood on the helicopter pad, the sun beginning to set, water glistening, and skyscrapers glowing behind us. The excitement for the journey ahead was undeniable. 🏙️✨

If you're planning to cruise out of Miami soon, here’s your go-to guide to start your vacation off right!

1. Arrive Early & Explore Miami

We always recommend arriving a day early before any cruise — travel delays happen, and it’s not worth the risk. But in Miami, showing up early is also a chance to enjoy the city’s vibrant culture and iconic spots like:

  • South Beach

  • Little Havana

  • Wynwood Walls

  • Bayside Marketplace

For overnight stays, we’ve found that Brickell is the best location for a night in Miami due to its vibrant, high-end shopping and dining scene, not to mention it’s a very safe area. Looking for a great affordable place to stay in Brickell? Look no farther than the CitizenM. For a more luxurious offering, head just across the river to the Intercontinental Miami by IHG. Just plan to include a small budget for an Uber or Lyft to the port.

2. Embarkation Day Tips

PortMiami is the busiest cruise port in the world! Serving over 8 million passengers in 2024, it is home to most major cruise lines. Thankfully, cruise lines stagger their check-in times to keep the flow moving — but it’s still a bustling place.

Here’s how to make your embarkation day smooth and stress-free:

  • Complete all check-in steps and safety briefings on your cruise line’s app BEFORE embarkation! Many cruise lines open online check in as early as 45 days prior to departure! The earlier you check in, the better chance you will have of grabbing the earliest boarding times.

  • Have your boarding passes and ID (printed, digital, or ideally both) ready

  • Pack a carry-on bag with essentials (your main luggage may arrive later)

  • Wear sunscreen, even indoors and on cloudy days— it’s Miami, after all! 🌞

3. Don’t Miss the Sailaway Moment

This is where Miami truly shines. Whether you head to the top deck, your balcony, or the helicopter pad (like we did!), make time to soak it all in. As you glide past the high-rises of downtown, yachts docked at Star Island, the world-famous South Beach, and the never-ending blue of the ocean, it’s a moment that never gets old — especially if you catch it during sunset.

4. Disembarkation Day Tips

When it's time to leave the ship, resist the urge to call an Uber or Lyft immediately. Prices tend to spike as crowds pour out of the terminal. Instead:

  • Wait a few minutes in a shaded area

  • Reflect on the memories (and maybe scroll through your vacation photos)

  • Watch as the rates drop and ride-share availability improves

If you have time before your flight, extend the vacation feel a little longer by booking a day pass at a local resort. It’s a small splurge that lets you lounge poolside, store your luggage, and truly savor every last moment of your getaway.

Whether it’s your first time sailing out of Miami or your tenth, this vibrant port city sets the tone for an unforgettable trip. Safe travels and happy cruising! 🚢🌴
